Taiichi Ohno acknowledged that a key stimulus to JIT was his close reading of this book. Today, these same ideas are re-emerging to revitalize American industry in new ways. 'I, for one, am in awe of Ford's greatness. ![]() I believe Ford was a born rationalist -- and I feel more so every time I read his writings. He had a deliberate and scientific way of thinking about industry in America. For example, on the issues of standardization and the nature of waste in business, Ford's perception of things was orthodox and universal.' Taiichi Ohno '. I loved this book. I often teach that Lean is not implicitly a “Japanese” concept but an American concept that was transferred (and subsequently perfected by) many Japanese companies after WWII. However after reading this book, there was so much more that have lead to the roadmap of today’s Lean Thinking. Respect for People & Jidoka (Toyota’s Pillars) are prominently called out in this book, even though Ford doesn’t title them this. In a time where there was no middle class - he showed respect for people. Paying a much higher minimum wage ($5/day) and enacting a 8 hour day he stressed a good work/life balance. Also by paying his employees at such a wage, he created a class of consumers. Ford stresses repeatedly through “Today & Tomorrow” that it is possible to pay high wages and reduce cost of product as his people are workers and problem solvers. He definitely was influential thinker who coveted TPM & 5s – both major elements to Jidoka. Several points throughout the book He makes reference that: Machines are “seldom down as they are serviced regularly and constantly cleaned”. When taking ownership of a railroad he applied the same methods – neat and orderly and serviced equipment. He took the time to identify several types of WASTE and explained many steps his teams have taken to remove those wastes. Motions, transportation, proper inventory levels, and scrap/rework were all addressed as adding to costs and should be eliminated where possible. There are parts of this book that I didn’t enjoy as much. He talks at points about “educating his employees to spend”. Having read his biography I know Ford actually had set up some “Ford Social Services” where expected and sometimes even enforced his employees to live to a certain standard. Couple other minor sections I didn’t care for but the chapters are short and I muddled through those sections fairly quickly. All in all a very good book that I would recommend to anyone in Continuous Improvement roles also anyone interested in business history. TODAY AND TOMORROW HENRY FORD PDF. Today And Tomorrow Henry Ford Actually, publication is really a home window to the world. Also many individuals could not. Ford cites multiple examples from Ford Motors where better management improved the bottom line and also improved the lives of his workers. The book reads somewhat like an Ayn Rand novel - the producers of the world carry the load for the moochers. Ford does offer ample advice and has a very quotable writing style. The only thing that kept me from giving it five stars was the constant droning about how Ford Motors is the best thing since sliced bread. Otherwise, this is a very good book, maybe a must read, for those interested in continuous process improvement. This book is the second of 3 books written by Henry Ford. This book is essential for anyone interested in Henry Ford, the Model T, or automotive history. It has a large amount technical description of various manufacturing processes. Although Ford did not invent the automobile or the assembly line, he developed and manufactured the first automobile that many middle class Americans could afford. In doing so, Ford converted the automobile from an expensive curiosity into a practical conveyance that would profoundly impact the landscape of the twentieth century. His introduction of the Model T automobile revolutionized transportation and American industry. As owner of the Ford Motor Company, he became one of the richest and best-known people in the world. He is credited with 'Fordism': mass production of inexpensive goods coupled with high wages for workers. Ford had a global vision, with consumerism as the key to peace. His intense commitment to systematically lowering costs resulted in many technical and business innovations, including a franchise system that put dealerships throughout most of North America and in major cities on six continents. Ford left most of his vast wealth to the Ford Foundation and arranged for his family to control the company permanently. Ford was also widely known for his pacifism during the first years of World War I, and also for being the publisher of anti semitic texts such as the book The International Jew. His father gave him a pocket watch in his early teens. At 15, Ford dismantled and reassembled the timepieces of friends and neighbors dozens of times, gaining the reputation of a watch repairman. Ford was devastated when his mother died in 1876. His father expected him to eventually take over the family farm, but he despised farm work. He later wrote, 'I never had any particular love for the farm—it was the mother on the farm I loved.' In 's Brave New World (1932), society is organized on 'Fordist' lines, the years are dated A.F. Or Anno Ford ('In the Year of our Ford'), and the expression 'My Ford' is used instead of 'My Lord'. Upton Sinclair created a fictional description of Ford in the 1937 novel The Flivver King. Symphonic composer Ferde Grofe composed a tone poem in Henry Ford's honor (1938). Ford is treated as a character in several historical novels, notably E. Doctorow's Ragtime (1975), and Richard Powers' novel Three Farmers on the Way to a Dance (1985). Ford, his family, and his company were the subjects of a 1986 biography by Robert Lacey entitled Ford: The Men and the Machine. The book was adapted in 1987 into a film starring Cliff Robertson and Michael Ironside. In the 2005 alternative history novel The Plot Against America, Philip Roth features Ford as Secretary of Interior in a fictional Charles Lindbergh presidential administration. The British author Douglas Galbraith uses the event of the Ford Peace Ship as the center of his novel King Henry (2007). Ford appears as a Great Builder in the 2008 strategy video game Civilization Revolution. In December 1999, Ford was among 18 included in Gallup's List of Widely Admired People of the 20th Century, from a poll conducted of the American people. In 1928, Ford was awarded the Franklin Institute's Elliott Cresson Medal. In 1938, Ford was awarded Nazi Germany's Grand Cross of the German Eagle, a medal given to foreigners sympathetic to Nazism. The United States Postal Service honored Ford with a Prominent Americans series (1965–1978) 12¢ postage stamp. Open Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) on your Windows or Mac computer. Many people are reacting negatively to this, but the truth is there are still several ways to download Nook ebooks to create backups, move books between devices, or, if you so choose. You just can’t download Nook ebooks from a web browser anymore. And with B&N set to, we can expect to see lots of additional changes in the coming months. Like most people, I just figured the removal of the download option for ebooks was another one of B&N’s quirks, and that the issue would get worked out in a few days. But that’s not the case this time. Nook Customer Care tweeted this in response to a customer who asked why they couldn’t download their purchased ebooks: The ability to sideload NOOK purchased content has been discontinued. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. — NOOK Customer Care (@NOOK_Care) Barnes and Noble appears to be making other changes as well. I can’t get Nook for Web to work at all this morning; it just gives an error message. Is it another quirk, or something bigger? Perhaps B&N is revamping Nook for Web, as they what to move toward an online reading platform. Whatever B&N’s reasoning is, if you want control of the Nook books that you purchased then you better take action and download them all locally while you still can. Who knows, B&N could start blocking these alternatives at any time, especially considering some have already been killed off by B&N in the past. How to Download Nook Books There are several ways to download your purchased Nook ebooks to get them on a Windows or Mac computer for backup, at which point you can load them into Calibre and from them if you choose (no need to use ADE with those directions). You just have to locate the folder where B&N stores your Nook books locally on your particular system (i.e. Documents My Barnes & Noble eBooks). Nook for PC – B&N discontinued Nook for PC along time ago, but you can still use it to access your Nook books and download them to a Windows computer. Nook Study – This is an alternative desktop program that works for downloading Nook books to a Windows or Mac computer. Greasemonkey Firefox Add-on (no longer works for this) – An add-on for the Firefox web browser that lets you customize the way a web page displays, and with JavaScrpt code you can create a download option for Nook ebooks from the Nook Library. Nook Apps – You can use Nook Android or iOS apps to download Nook ebooks and then you can transfer them to a computer a number of ways, with Dropbox, a file manager app like ES File Explore, or with iFunbox for iOS. Just tried to download 2 recently-acquired Nook books, and the Nook for PC no longer works either. It does not find the two most recent books no longer how many times I refresh. This site suggests using the Nook Study program to download; I haven’t tried this yet. I tried to split my ebook purchases across Amazon and B&N because I believe in supporting both vendors. Unfortunately, B&N has officially made it too difficult for me to use their site. Thank goodness I’d long since downloaded and Calibre-ized the many hundreds of books I’d previously gotten from eReader (later bought by B&N) or I’d be out several thousands spent on digital media. As of June 2015 BN changed encryption method and no longer uses credit card. No PC desktop application (Nook for PC or Nook Study will properly generate the encryption key, and the website no longer allows downloads. The ONLY working method is to use a win 8.1 or win 10 machine with the app from the store. This correctly downloads and generates the encrytion key. Calibre with Alf DeDRM does work on these books. The Nook app downloaded epubs are stored in a new place, users app data local packages BN. You canpoint calibre with plugin there. Can you tell me how to get my paid ebooks from my iPad Air to my Mac? I downloaded them to the iPad Nook app, but since the app is no longer going to be supported, I’m trying to get my purchased books (few, but expensive and important) to the mac. I’ve tried Calibre, but can’t find the files on the iPad Air. I’ve tried iFunbox but my Mac wouldn’t allow it to open because of “security issues”. I know we’re on a deadline here (15 March 2016), and I’ve been trying ever since the UK Guardian published the article last week, without success. Any other suggestions? I just found out that there is no longer any “nook for mac/pc” app and when I go online to try to read my books it only allows you to to view a sample. So essentially what they have done is ended my access to the many, many books I have purchased unless I use a phone or their reader? It does not look like there is any way to download the books to my computer anymore since I don’t have the computer app and B&N does not allow you to access the book from your online account. This seems like it should be pretty criminal since they are essentially taking back purchased content from their customers without providing any kind of refund.Even if they have gotten rid of the computer app there is no reason you should not be able to access your purchased content online through your account and all I can find online about this is that people have been complaining and that B&N said a year ago that they “were working on it”. Credit Card info in Nook Devices? I just found this stream of B&N Nook comments, so I don’t know whether the following is new, but it is sure FRIGHTENING to me: According to B&N support, every Nook download, whether Purchased or FREE, now requires VALID credit card information, which 2 different support people (via both CHAT and 1-800-THE-BOOK) tell me is now actually ATTACHED to each Nook file (supposedly to Prevent duplication to other readers). Well, that might prevent voluntary duplication of files, but what about the event of a Nook device, containing CCard-attached Nook file(s), being stolen? A thief with a hacker would find much more value in the attached CCard info, than in the Nook Books stolen. Neither rep had any answer for me. In fact, the rep at 1-800-THE-BOOK just hung up on me. I just downloaded Nook for PC to my Windows 7 computer. (CNet still has it available.) I installed it with no trouble and gave it my account information (email address and password), which it had no trouble authenticating. Then I tried to get it to synch with my library and it found *nothing*. So I tried hooking my Nook Color to the computer and synching that way. It asked for my Adobe ID and password, which I gave it. It asked me to authorize both the PC and the Nook, which I did. Then I again attempted to synch, and Nook for PC *still* found nothing! I must conclude that B&N has deliberately disabled any access by Nook for PC, as part of its partnership with Microsoft which “encourages” people to “upgrade” their OS to Window 8.1 or 10. The only technique that I can now find for downloading Nook books to the PC is via Nook for Android, which means either downloading them to a smart phone (as if I had that much room on my phone) or installing the Windows version of Android. Working as of 5/16/2017. I purchases a book from the Barnes and Noble website but there was no download link for the epub file like they use too. I was able to view the ebook on my android tablet just fine, but I wanted the epub file as a backup just in case something happen. After a lot of research I was able to download the epub file and remove the DRM encryption. Here are the steps and please post a comment if this works for you. I use Google search to find all the software versions and instructions. – Download Nook for PC 2.5.6 the old version. – Download Calibre 2.85.1 – Download Apprentice Alf DeDRM – DeDRM_tools_6.5.3.zip – Install Nook for PC and download the epub file from your library. (go to your library, click the options button then download. Verify in your Documents folder that the epub file downloaded) – Install Calibre. (straight forward) – Install Apprentice Alf DeDRM plugin into Calibre. (instructions online) – Configure the DeDRM plugin so that it can retrieve your encryption key from Barnes and Noble (you’ll need to enter your Barnes and Noble email and password in order to retrieve the encryption keys from Barnes and Noble servers. If you are scared, changed your password after you verify that everything is working. This worked for me and I hope it works for everyone. ![]() The key to successfully bantering female friends and acquaintances into bed, is to be a charming James Bond 90% of the time, and a naughty boy who flushes an M-80 down the toilet at school 10% of the time. 90% of the time you are a gentleman who is asking questions of his date because he is sincerely interested and fascinated by her. ![]() What better way to DISCOVER how to get a woman into your bed than from a woman! The following is an e-mail from a reader. He’s got a woman who he is good friends with, but she has a boyfriend. She gives him signs that she has romantic interest in him, but he does not know what to do to let her know he is open to hooking up. My comments and some good bantering suggestions are (in bold brackets like this) in the body of his e-mail: Hi Corey, I hope things are moving well on your side. I have a situation of which I see to be a sign of a confused woman even though I am not a relationship expert like you. There’s a very beautiful girl I like and I can comfortably say that my interest level in her is more than 51%. (If you’re talking to me about her, then I know you like her.) I have been feeling this about for 3 years now. However, I cannot tell of her interest level in me but maybe you can tell if I tell you what she does. Firstly, at times, she tells me I am a man she wouldn’t hesitate to be with. (When she says that say, “Great! So what time are you coming over to get naked in my bed?”) At some point, she had to write me, “I feel so good when I am with you. I am so free at your house as if I am at my own parent’s residence.” (Say, “Let’s be naughty then! We should have sex right now, but you know what? We’ll hide it from your parents!”) However, she also tells me she feels uncomfortable to hug me for so long because she feels like she’s cheating her man. (Say, “That’s ok baby. He can keep you busy when you’re not with me. I don’t get jealous. I’m totally cool with sharing.”) Secondly, she does my shopping almost every month. She told me never to do any shopping because she will be there to do it. (She does your shopping, but no happy finish for you? Bummer) Thirdly, she says unusual stuff. “I miss your house so much. (Well come on over! We can chase each other naked around the house all day. Maybe a little naked twister, some wine, chocolate, whip cream, strawberries, Indoor Olympics, etc.”) I wanted to ask you to tell your houseboy that I would be there to relax, watching TV.” (“I don’t mind the naughty things you do to your body while laying naked on my couch waiting for me to come home. As long as you are naked, horny and ready to jump my bones the minute I come home and walk in the door.”) she never says that she misses me even though it is not always the case. (Stop saying it. Besides, she has a boyfriend.. Use sexual innuendo when you are around her in a playful way. If she feels the same why she will banter back and escalate things with you. If she ever dumps the boyfriend and has romantic interest in you, you’ll get your shot. But at this point you have become her male girlfriend. You should focus your time on meeting and dating women who are single and available. Become successful meeting, dating and sleeping with other women. That will give you SWAGGER that will cause your friend to work to catch you if you let her do all the pursuing and calling in your friendship if she decides to end things with her boyfriend. However, for now she is unavailable. That is why you need to get busy and spend your time with women who are single and ready to mingle!) She is seeing a University finalist who is 2 years her junior and she had to tell me this about their relationship, “everything between us is OK, but I always know for a fact that he’s younger than me. The way I know him, it will take him 4 to 5 years to settle down because he’s only 21 years old I want to settle down in 2years time.” (That is the honest state of her level of interest in her boyfriend. Maybe 70%-80% interest level in him. Not high enough to fall in love, not low enough for her to want to dump him.) In addition, she seems to suspect him of cheating even though she doesn’t have enough proof. (She obviously knows she does not fully have his heart, love and presence.) I love this girl. (Easy bubba, slow down there. She has not done anything to.) Can you decipher what all this means? Do you think that there’s a chance to have this girl with her man around? What should I do to get her. (The best thing you can do to get her? Focus on applying what I teach in my book on other women. And you will raise your status romantically to all women. Stop calling, texting and pursuing this girl.. Only invite her over when she brings up seeing you. If she does not, talk for a few minutes and then tell her you got to run, but keep in touch. She will feel that you are focusing your energy elsewhere. If she cares, she will try to get you to spend more time with her. If she does not, you won’t hear from her very much. You can get this girl as a side-effect of becoming successful with other women.. That will make it easier to always do the right thing with your girl “friend” and other women. Forget about the relationship stuff. That’s the woman’s department. So unless the woman brings up exclusivity labels, etc. Then there’s nothing to talk about.. Please advise. George Here is the second e-mail I want to share with you. This particular reader is in college and has befriended a lovely lady he has interest in. He’s just like I was at his age. Spending time with girls he likes, but not knowing where or when to ask for a date, a kiss, etc. I know exactly how he feels. Awkward and unsure of what to do or say without screwing things up. My comments (are in bold brackets like this) in the body of his e-mail: Hi, Corey Bro, my name is Tom. I’ve been reading your articles and I’ve learned a lot from them. I met a girl at the university. I just don’t know if she wants me as her boyfriend, or just like a friend. I realized that she feels comfortable being with me. Because when we talk she looks me directly into the eyes, sometimes she takes my arm (Say, “Why don’t you stop torturing yourself and kiss me?” as you look into her eyes, and then at her lips, and then back into her eyes again. If she feels like kissing you, she will look at your lips when you are doing this. If she does, then go for the kiss. Then you know she likes you romantically. If she does not look at your lips, then it means she’s not ready to be kissed.) or, once, I remember, while talking she played with my hand. She gave me little gifts such as candy’s, lol. (Say, “Gifts? My favorite kinds of gifts are sweet kisses! You got any of those for me?”) I don’t know if she has boyfriend., but I suspect that, if she is in a relationship, she’s unhappy with the relationship. (Based upon what? How can you possibly make any judgements about her relationship if you don’t even know if she’s in one? I think you are projecting your own high level of interest onto her.) As you know, Valentine’s Day is near. I don’t know. You’re not her boyfriend or even someone she is dating.) Or Should I give her a gift on her birthday? Her birthday is also near. (no) I want to date her, but I just don’t know how to date her; which words to say? I’ve got her e-mail and her number. (Bury your face in my book so you can start to learn what to look for in a woman to determine if you’ve got a shot with her. Right now you are flying blind. Hi Corey, I have been friends with a girl I met in college for touching nearly 4 years now, I have been interested in her for a long time now but I can’t tell if she is interested in me. You see there are moments she shows great interest and then others, mostly, she seems to see me as her “bro”. I have looked into your work and have started to venture out. So far so good, I have the attention of a few girls that you could say have been in my friend circle or met through the gym place or through friends. I am really taking the playful approach as you suggest, enjoy myself, have fun. Then out of nowhere this girl I liked texts me really late one night and tells me she is interested in another, but here’s the thing, it’s a girl. So she swings both ways it would seem, fair enough. It took me by surprise, I was supportive of course she said she was afraid about coming out to her family. After this she is lucky to have a bro like me and that she has gotten me a Christmas present. This has me a little confused, I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on this. Narrative Elaine Tyler May is Regents Professor of American Studies and History, and Chair of the Department of History. She is a historian of the United States in the twentieth century whose work centers on the intersections of gender, sexuality, race, domestic culture and politics. Her scholarship explores the ways in which issues normally considered part of private life – such as consumerism, security, and leisure pursuits – reflect, express, and influence American political, cultural, and social values. Her books and articles examine changing expectations for marriage in the early 20th century, family and sexuality in the cold war era, the history of women, and the history of childlessness, reproduction, and birth control in America. Her current research project is an examination of the legacy of the cold war at home, which explores the ongoing quest for national and personal security in terms of Americans’ sense of danger from within as well as outside the country. It seeks to offer guidance on designing easily linearizable systems that have low memory effects. The reader is offered a detailed understanding of how the matching impedances of a power amplifier and other RF circuits can be tuned to minimize overall distortion. It also demonstrates how to build models that can be used for distortion simulations. The measurement methodology should enable the reader to gauge the amplitude and phase of distortion components and recognize memory effects. The volume explains that by killing memory effects, it is possible to use simple linearizers, such as analogue predistortion, and still achieve sufficient performance. It presents a distortion analysis technique that allows you to repeat the analysis with other amplifier structures. With over 120 equations and more than 110 illustrations, this practical reference seeks to provide the assistance necessary to create amplifiers suitable for linear transmitters, and offers views of semiconductor modelling. Improving the performance of the power amplifier is the most pressing problem facing designers of modern radio-frequency (RF) transceivers. Linearity and power efficiency of the transmit path are of utmost importance, and the power amplifier has proven to be the bottleneck for both. ![]() High linearity enables transmission at the highest data rates for a given channel bandwidth, and power efficiency prolongs battery lifetime in portable units and reduces heat dissipation in high-power transmitters. You can sequentially number pages in booked documents, print selected documents in a book, or export them to PDF. One document can belong to multiple book files. One of the documents added to a book file is the style source. ![]() By default, the style source is the first document in the book, but you can select a new style source at any time. When you synchronize documents in a book, the specified styles and swatches from the style source replace those in other booked documents. Michael Murphy provides a video tutorial about creating books. Each open book file appears on its own tab in the Book panel. If multiple books are open at the same time, click a tab to bring that book to the front and access its panel menu. Icons in the Book panel indicate a document’s current status, such as open, missing (the document was moved, renamed, or deleted), modified (the document was edited or its page or section numbers changed while the book was closed), or in use (if someone else has the document open in a managed workflow). No icon appears next to closed documents. When you synchronize documents in a book, the items you specify—styles, variables, master pages, trap presets, cross-reference formats, conditional text settings, numbered lists, and swatches—are copied from the style source to the specified documents in the book, replacing any items that have identical names. If items in the style source are not found in the documents being synchronized, they are added. Items that are not included in the style source are left as is in the documents being synchronized. Master pages are synchronized in the same way as other items—master pages with the same name (such as A-Master) as those in the style source are replaced. Synchronizing masters is useful for documents that use the same design elements, such as running headers and footers. However, if you want to preserve page items on a master page in documents other than the style source, either don’t synchronize master pages or create master pages with different names. Any master page items that are overridden on document pages after you synchronize masters for the first time are detached from the master. Therefore, if you plan on synchronizing master pages in your book, it’s a good idea to synchronize all the documents in your book at the start of the design process. That way, overridden master page items will maintain their connection to the master page and will continue to be updated from modified master page items in the style source. It’s also a good idea to synchronize master pages using only one style source. If you synchronize from a different style source, overridden master page items may become detached from the master page. If you need to synchronize using a different style source, deselect the Master Pages option in the Synchronize Options dialog box before doing so. You can determine how pages, chapters, and paragraphs are numbered in a book. In a book file, the numbering styles and starting numbers for pages and chapters are determined by each document’s settings in the Numbering & Section Options dialog box or the Document Numbering Options dialog box. You can open one of these dialog boxes by choosing Layout > Numbering & Section Options in the document or by choosing Document Numbering Options in the Book panel menu. For information on adding page numbering to a document, see. For numbered paragraphs (such as lists of figures), numbering is determined by the numbered list style definition contained by the paragraph style. The page range appears beside each document name in the Book panel. By default, InDesign updates page and section numbering in the Book panel when you add or remove pages in booked documents, or when you make changes to the book file, such as reordering, adding, or removing documents. If you turn off the setting to automatically update page and section numbers, you can update numbering in a book manually. If the book is updated and the numbering seems incorrect, the problem may be that absolute numbers are displayed instead of section numbers in General preferences. If a document is missing or cannot be opened, the page range is shown as “?” from the place where the missing document should be to the end of the book, indicating that the true page range is unknown. Remove or replace the missing document before you update numbering. If the In Use icon appears, someone using a different computer has opened the document in a managed workflow; the person must close the document before you can update numbering. ![]() Creating an eBook with InDesign CS5.
