But within two decades a rapid development of catalysts began - the driving force was considerably the group around Robert Grubbs. The intensive phase, in whose ruthenium catalysts were developed at Calltech, is described in the first volume in a familiar style. Beside the chapters about characteristics of the different catalyst types and their synthesis, I call the chapter 'The Discovery and Development of Well-Defined, Ruthenium-Based Olefin Metathesis Catalysts' an absolute highlight for the aforementioned reasons. The second book dedicates itself above all to the ring closing reactions and points out the variety of possibilities, which are no more longer limited to the metathesis of terminal double bonds. Current examples of alkene-alkyne metathesis as well as alkyne-alkyne metathesis and domino metathesis show the unbelievable variety of possibilities, from which research and development can select today. All three volumes create a final overview of the topic 'Metathesis'. In my opinion, the meaning of this kind of reaction still will increase and the acquisition of the books is not only worth for working groups, which are concerning with metathesis. The multiplicity of examples from the current literature with applications from total synthesis and medical chemistry are a rich source for every chemist.
